Teacher Breaks Guinness World Record After 61 Years in the Classroom

There’s a remarkable story of dedication and joy coming out of the United States that’s inspiring people around the world. Glenda Akin, a teacher from Westmoreland High School in Tennessee, has been officially recognised by Guinness World Records for the longest career as a female teacher at the same school, a staggering 61 years and 43 days of educating generations of students.

Akin began her journey in the classroom in 1963, long before personal computers were part of everyday school life. Over the decades, she taught social studies, worked in the school library, and became a beloved figure in the community she served.

Looking back on her long career, she told CBC Radio’s As It Happens,

“I loved my job. I didn’t mind getting up and going to school every day.”

She added how close the school community became to her over the years, saying,

“All of my family is gone, and so the school community, you know, they more or less became my family.”

A Legacy That Spans Generations

Her achievement is not just about the length of her career, but the impact she had on countless lives. One of her former students went on to become a teacher at the same school and retired a full decade before she did, a vivid illustration of how her influence rippled through the community.

The school community celebrated her achievement by renaming the library in her honour, and installing a plaque that reads, “Her six decades of service to our school and community will remain forever cherished.”

Although she has now retired, Akin remains active and engaged. She volunteers at local and church libraries, participates in her seniors’ organisation, and enjoys playing bingo, proof that her spirit and curiosity have never faded.

For students, former colleagues, and communities everywhere, Glenda Akin’s story is a vivid reminder that dedication and passion in one’s work can leave a lasting legacy, not just in records, but in the hearts and minds of the people touched along the way.
