On June 27 1894 Annie Londonderry set off on a round-the-world trip on her bicycle. She was competing in the trip to win a $10,000 wager, which would be approximately $350,000 in 2022.

Londonberry completed the trip in just under 15 months, setting off from Boston, Massachusetts, and making her way across America. She took a boat to France, and travelled to different places, including Egypt, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Saigon, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Nagasaki and Kobe. It is speculated that she took her bike on the trip, and made use of public transport, however, she was a 24 year-old mother of three who took on a daring trip for a woman in the late 19th century.
