June 13

Pioneer 10 leaves the Milky Way

NASA’s Pioneer 10 was initially launched in 1972 with the intent to fly by Jupiter to collect information about the mysterious planet. However on the 13th of June 1974 after passing Neptune Pioneer 10 left the milking way, becoming the first human made object to leave our solar system.

June 14

First non-stop transatlantic flight in 1919

On June 14, the first non-stop transatlantic flight took place. John Alcock and Arthur Brown flew a modified World War One plane called a Vickers Vimy. The flight took off from St John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, and arrived in Galway, Ireland less than 16 hours later. Despite suffering a broken generator, and a leaky exhaust pipe, the pair made it to Ireland. They took two toy cats as mascots- some would say they were good luck charms.

Spain held its first democratic elections since 1936 on June 15 1977. Adolfo Suárez became Spain’s first democratically elected Prime Minister.

First woman in Space in 1963

Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman in space on this day in 1963. She was in space for almost and orbited Earth 48 times in her space capsule, Vostok 6. Tereshkova was a textile worker by trade, however, she was accepted onto the space program due to being a keen parachute jumper. Prior to her space expedition she had completed 126 parachute jumps!

June 17

The Statue of Liberty arrives in New York in 1885

The Statue of Liberty arrived in New York on this day in 1885. The statue was a gift from France to the United States and due to its size arrived dismantled!.

June 18

Sir Paul McCartney is born on June 18th 1942!

The legendary singer of The Beatles and Wings fame turns 80 on June 18 1942. Sir Paul is also a philanthropist and animal rights activist. He famously said, “If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be a vegetarian.
