When a homeless man found a check for $10k his only thoughts were returning it to its rightful owner. Now, the man has been rewarded with a whole new life.
Elmer Alvarez had been living on the streets for several years when he found the check. His first thought was: “I got to look for this person.”
And despite having no cash himself, Alvarez didn’t consider using the money for himself. He said:
“It never crossed my mind because I made a decision to turn my life over. I’ve been clean for three years.”
The check belonged to real estate broker Roberta Hoskie. She was surprised to find that somebody in Elmer’s position had returned the check, instead expecting it to come from somebody in a fancy suit.
Luckily for Elmer, Roberta was full of compassion for his situation due to her own experience with homelessness as a teenage mother. She offered him a reward for returning the check, which made Elmer cry due to the kind gesture.
Roberta also offered Elmer a place to live, paying his rent for seven months, and put him through real estate school.
